In 1572, Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe was among those who noticed a new bright object in the constellation Cassiopeia. Adding fuel to the intellectual fire that Copernicus started, Tycho showed this “new star” was far beyond the Moon, and that it was possible for the universe beyond the Sun and planets to change. Astronomers now know that Tycho’s new star was not new at all. Rather it signaled the death of a star in a supernova, an explosion so bright that it can outshine the light from an entire galaxy. This particular supernova was a Type Ia, which occurs when a white dwarf star pulls material from, or merges with, a nearby companion star until a violent explosion is triggered. The white dwarf star is…

NASA astronaut Christina Koch worked while tethered near the Port 6 truss segment of the International Space Station to replace older hydrogen-nickel batteries with newer, more powerful lithium-ion batteries, during the October 11, 2019, spacewalk. Fellow NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan (out of frame) assisted Koch during the six-hour and 45-minute spacewalk. On Friday, October 18, 2019, Koch and fellow astronaut Jessica Meir will conduct the first all female spacewalk. They will replace a faulty battery charge/discharge unit (BCDU). The BCDU failed to activate following the installation of new lithium-ion batteries on the space station’s truss earlier this month. Amy Ross, a spacesuit engineer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, left, and NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, second from left, presented the latest generation spacesuits to the world on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Standing next to the administrator is Kristine Davis, a spacesuit engineer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, who wore a ground prototype of NASA’s new Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU), and Dustin Gohmert, Orion Crew Survival Systems Project Manager at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, who wore the Orion Crew Survival System suit, right, wave after being introduced. The xEMU suit improves on the suits previous worn on the Moon during the Apollo era and those currently in use for spacewalks outside the International Space Station and will be worn…

NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor speaks about her experience on Expeditions 56 and 57 onboard the International Space Station to the students of the Excel Academy Public Charter School, Monday, June 10, 2019 in Washington, DC. Before a rapt audience at the all-girls school, Dr. Auñón-Chancellor talked about the 197 days she spent living and working onboard the space station. She contributed to hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science. She is also a medical doctor and started her career with NASA as a flight surgeon in 2006. Since 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 the International Day of the Girl Child. Its mission is “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them…

In the high desert of California, some of the most important aircraft in aviation history have been built and flown. NASA’s X-59 QueSST (short for Quiet SuperSonic Technology) is an experimental piloted aircraft designed to fly faster than sound without producing the annoying – if not alarming – sonic booms of previous supersonic aircraft. It is the latest craft to take shape at Skunk Works, a renowned Lockheed Martin division that for the past 76 years has used a unique approach to design and manufacturing that has produced the nation’s most advanced airplanes. This artist’s concept of NASA’s QueSST jet reflects the airplane’s final configuration following years of research and design engineering. The jet is now under construction by Lockheed Martin at the company’s Skunk…

The center of our Milky Way galaxy is hidden from the prying eyes of optical telescopes by clouds of obscuring dust and gas. But in this stunning vista, the Spitzer Space Telescope’s infrared cameras penetrate much of the dust, revealing the stars of the crowded galactic center region. The upcoming James Webb Space Telescope will offer a much-improved infrared view, teasing out fainter stars and sharper details. The center of our galaxy is a crowded place: A black hole weighing 4 million times as much as our Sun is surrounded by millions of stars whipping around it at breakneck speeds. This extreme environment is bathed in intense ultraviolet light and X-ray radiation. Yet much of this activity is hidden from our view, obscured by vast…

Discovered in 2018 by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Satellite Survey (TESS) mission, planet LHS 3844b is located 48.6 light-years from Earth and has a radius 1.3 times that of Earth. It orbits a small, cool type of star called an M dwarf – especially noteworthy because, as the most common and long-lived type of star in the Milky Way galaxy, M dwarfs may host a high percentage of the total number of planets in the galaxy. An August 2019 study using data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope provides a rare glimpse of conditions on the surface of a rocky planet orbiting a star beyond the Sun. The study, published in the journal Nature, shows that the planet’s surface may resemble those of Earth’s Moon or Mercury:…

Cosmologist Stephen Hawking changed our view of the universe with his remarkable theories and outreach. He also inspired generations around the world, making some of the most complicated physics of our time accessible to the masses. He also suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosisor, or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which gradually paralyzed him over the decades. Despite this crippling disease, Hawking produced ground-breaking theories on black holes and other celestial phenomena. In this image, Dr. Hawking delivers a speech entitled “Why We Should Go Into Space” during a lecture that was part of a series honoring NASA’s 50th Anniversary, Monday, April 21, 2008. He was joined on stage by his daughter Lucy. #…
