A team member from the Environmental Management Branch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center works to remove a mangrove seedling deposited by tropical winds on the shoreline of KARS Park at Kennedy in this image from April 12, 2023. This spring, workers in the area replaced sand and finished an offshore wave break. The mangroves will be repotted and held in nearby surface water protected from wind, waves, and ongoing maintenance activities until they can be replanted along the shoreline later. With its 140,000 acres located along the Atlantic coastline and within the Indian River Lagoon estuary, Kennedy has long taken measures to ensure its shorelines remain resilient. Mangroves are one of the greatest allies against erosion, as their root structure protects the shoreline in addition…

NASA astronaut Stephen Bowen and United Arab Emirates astronaut Sultan Alneyadi (partially obscured) are pictured in their spacesuits, exiting the International Space Station’s Quest airlock and beginning a spacewalk on April 28, 2023. The duo spent seven hours and one minute in the vacuum of space routing cables and installing insulation, readying the orbital outpost for its next set of roll-out solar arrays due to be installed after their delivery on the next SpaceX Dragon cargo mission. Popocatépetl, one of Mexico’s most active volcanoes, has been erupting since 2005. On April 14, 2023, when this image was acquired by Landsat 8, monitoring systems detected water vapor, volcanic gases, and ash coming from the volcano. Plumes rose as high as 4.5 miles (7.3 kilometers). Learn more about Popocatépetl. 哈勃太空望远镜拍摄到异常明亮的相互作用星系

This new image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope shows interacting galaxies known as AM 1214-255. These galaxies contain active galactic nuclei, or AGNs. An AGN is an extraordinarily luminous central region of a galaxy. Its extreme brightness is caused by matter whirling into a supermassive black hole at the galaxy’s heart. Hubble observed the galaxy closest to the center as part of an AGN survey, with the aim of compiling a dataset about nearby AGNs to be used as a resource for astronomers investigating AGN physics, black holes, host galaxy structure, and more. Dalcanton (University of Washington); Processing: Gladys Kober (NASA/Catholic University of America) NASA, ESA, A. Two neutron stars begin to merge in this illustration, blasting a jet of high-speed particles and producing a cloud of debris. These gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful events in the universe. Scientists think these kinds of events are factories for a significant portion of the universe’s heavy elements, including gold. They based their estimates on the rate of short burst GRBs thought to occur across the cosmos, but a Dec. 11, 2021, discovery showed they’ll need to factor long bursts into their calculations as well. For the last few decades, astronomers have generally divided GRBs into two categories. Long bursts emit gamma rays for two seconds or more and originate from the formation of dense objects like black holes in the centers of…

“I think that getting to be a crewmember on the International Space Station, and getting to serve there over the course of two long-duration stays, we really feel like we are bridge-builders. “We are actively building the bridge to the Moon and then on to Mars. We, and the science that we do and the operations we conduct, are bringing together these discrete building blocks and putting them on a bridge to prepare us for these long-duration missions. Especially when we go to Mars, I mean, we’re talking about [missions longer than] two years. We’re doing that science, we’re doing those space operations, but we’re serving as human subjects, too. We’ve learned a lot over the past two decades and we continue to learn a…

哈勃太空望远镜拍摄到一个难以捉摸的星系团

A menagerie of interesting astronomical finds are visible in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. In addition to several large elliptical galaxies, a ring-shaped galaxy is lurking on the right of the image. A pair of bright stars are also visible at the left of the image, notable for their colorful crisscrossing diffraction spikes. This collection of astronomical curiosities is the galaxy cluster ACO S520, located in the constellation Pictor and captured by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys. ACO S520 represents one of a series of Hubble observations searching for massive, luminous galaxy clusters that had not been captured by earlier surveys. Astronomers took advantage of occasional gaps in Hubble’s busy schedule to capture images of these barely explored galaxy clusters, revealing a…
