Cyclone Freddy is pictured northeast of the island nation of Mauritius from the International Space Station as it orbited 267 miles above the Indian Ocean on Feb. 20, 2023. On the space station are two NASA-built weather instruments, the Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer (COWVR) and the Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems (TEMPEST), that track tropical cyclones like Freddy. Launched in late 2021 to the space station, COWVR measures the speed and direction of wind at the ocean surface, and TEMPEST provides atmospheric water vapor measurements. Former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly snapped this photo of the Earth’s crescent, the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter (from top to bottom) on Aug. 6, 2015, while he was aboard the International Space Station. These celestial bodies have been quite close in the night sky; on March 1, Venus and Jupiter were nearest to each other. 蓝色的告别

蓝色的告别

A blue halo glows around Pluto’s receding crescent in this parting image taken by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft on July 14, 2015. At the time of this shot, New Horizons was 120,000 miles (200,000 kilometers) away from Pluto. Shown in approximate true color, the picture was constructed from a mosaic of six black-and-white images from the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager, with color added from a lower resolution Ralph/Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera color image. Scientists believe the haze is a smog resulting from the action of sunlight on methane and other molecules in Pluto’s atmosphere. This reaction produces a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that accumulate into small haze particles which scatter blue light. As they settle down through the atmosphere, the haze particles form numerous intricate…

Jamesa Stokes’ path to being an engineer at NASA started out on a completely different road. While she loved and excelled at math and science, she was also passionate about studio art, her first major in college. But knowing that science can also be a creative pursuit, she switched to physics and embarked on a journey to NASA when she reached grad school. Stokes, who received her bachelor’s degree in Physics from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, was awarded a graduate fellowship to conduct research at NASA Glenn. She later became a NASA intern and converted to a full-time Materials Research Engineer when she finished her Ph.D. “Working at NASA means tackling the bigger problems…

Two Joint Extravehicular Activity Test Team Field Test #3 (JETT3) mission members work on sample collection on the remote, rocky, high-desert terrain of the S P Crater near Flagstaff, Arizona, on Oct. 5, 2022. JETT3 was the third simulated moonwalk in preparation for future Artemis missions; during Artemis III, astronauts will visit the lunar South Pole region, which has never been explored by humans. The S P Crater has unique terrain and geology, as well as minimal communications infrastructure that make it a great location for an analog mission.
