On Jan. 25, 1984, President Ronald Reagan used his State of the Union address to call for NASA to build a permanent crewed space station. While Reagan’s speech took place in a broader sociopolitical context of generally heightened tensions with the Soviet Union, his remarks foreshadowed the international cooperation that has characterized the International Space Station. He called for NASA to invite other countries to participate “so we can strengthen peace, build prosperity, and expand freedom for all who share our goals.” Credit: National Archives and Records Administration National Archives and Records Administration

An international team of astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has obtained an in-depth inventory of the deepest, coldest ices measured to date in a molecular cloud. In addition to simple ices like water, the team was able to identify frozen forms of a wide range of molecules, from carbonyl sulfide, ammonia, and methane, to the simplest complex organic molecule, methanol. This is the most comprehensive census to date of the icy ingredients available to make future generations of stars and planets, before they are heated during the formation of young stars. This image from the telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) features the central region of the Chamaeleon I dark molecular cloud, which resides 630 light-years away. The cold, wispy cloud material (blue, center) is…

Snow and ice cover mountains of the Tien Shan range in this photograph taken from the International Space Station (ISS) on Feb. 9, 2022. The Tien Shan—which means heavenly mountains in Chinese—is one of the largest mountain ranges in the world, extending approximately 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) across Central Asia, mostly along the border between Kyrgyzstan and China. The glaciers covering these slopes are a crucial source of water for nearby farmers and residents. See more wintery photos from the ISS.

Snoopy, the zero gravity indicator that flew aboard Orion during the Artemis I mission, wears a smile after being unpacked from his transport case on Jan. 5, 2023. Zero gravity indicators are small items carried aboard spacecraft that provide a visual indicator when a spacecraft has reached the weightlessness of microgravity. NASA has held an association with Snoopy since the Apollo Era – the character has contributed to the excitement for NASA human spaceflight missions, helping inspire generations to dream big, and is a symbol of NASA’s safety culture and mission success.

NASA astronaut and Expedition 68 Flight Engineer Frank Rubio is all smiles as he observes the behavior of a free-flying water bubble inside the International Space Station’s (ISS) Kibo laboratory module on Oct. 10, 2022. Fluid physics is the study of liquid and gas motion and the effects of forces on liquids and gases. The International Space Station’s low-gravity environment offers a unique place to study fluid physics. Nearly weightless conditions allow researchers to observe and control fluid phenomena in ways not possible on Earth. Learn more about fluid physics research on the ISS. The Artemis I Orion capsule is secured on a platform inside the Multi-Payload Processing Facility (MPPF) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida in this image from Jan. 6, 2023. Orion splashed down on Dec. 11, 2022 and was transported back to Kennedy for de-servicing inside the MPPF. During Orion’s 25.5-day trip beyond the Moon and back, it flew farther than any designed to carry humans to deep space and safely return them to Earth, paving the way for human deep space exploration and demonstrating NASA’s commitment and capability to extend human presence to the Moon and beyond.
