NASA astronaut and Expedition 68 Flight Engineer Nicole Mann peers through one of the seven windows in the cupola, the International Space Station’s “window to the world” on Jan. 2, 2023. Mann displays the U.S. flag inside the cupola in the window next to her. The cupola is designed for watching operations outside the station such as robotic activities, the approach of vehicles, and spacewalks. Its windows provide spectacular views of Earth and celestial objects. The scattered stars of the globular cluster NGC 6355 are strewn across this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 6355 is a galactic globular cluster that resides in our Milky Way galaxy’s inner regions. It is less than 50,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. Globular clusters are stable, tightly bound groups of tens of thousands to millions of stars that are associated with all types of galaxies. Their dense populations of stars and mutual gravitational attraction give these clusters a roughly spherical shape that holds a bright, central concentration of stars surrounded by an increasingly sparse sprinkling of stars. The dense, bright core of NGC 6355 shines in crystal-clear detail as Hubble is able to resolve individual stars in the crowded…

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) spacecraft is seen in this early morning photo from Dec. 14, 2022, as preparations for launch continued. SWOT, the first satellite mission that will observe nearly all water on Earth’s surface, launched on Dec. 16. Jointly developed by NASA and Centre National D’Études Spatiales, with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency and United Kingdom Space Agency, the satellite will measure the height of water in the planet’s lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and oceans. This photo was chosen by the NASA Headquarters photographers as one of the best images from 2022. See the rest on Flickr. Support teams work around the SpaceX Crew Dragon Endurance spacecraft shortly after it landed on Friday, May 6, 2022 with Crew-3 NASA astronauts Raja Chari, Kayla Barron, Tom Marshburn, and European Space Agency astronaut Matthias Maurer aboard. To protect the health and safety of the astronauts, the recovery teams, and the general public, highly trained rescue and recovery personnel are pre-positioned for launch and return to react quickly. Mission teams also establish safety zones in the water to protect the boating public around the area of splashdown. This photo was chosen by the NASA Headquarters photographers as one of the best from 2022. See the rest on Flickr. HIRISE发现火星陨石坑沉积物

This image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft’s HIRISE instrument on Oct. 23, 2022, of the northern plains of Arabia Terra shows craters that contain curious deposits with mysterious shapes and distribution. For instance, the deposits are located on the south sides of the craters, but not usually in the north, and are found only in craters larger than 600 meters in diameter. Scientists suspect that these features formed by sublimation of ice-rich material. Learn more about these crater deposits. 阿波罗8号宇航员比尔·安德斯拍摄了地出

On Dec. 24, 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the first humans to orbit the Moon, and the first to witness the magnificent sight called “Earthrise.” As the spacecraft was in the process of rotating, Anders took this iconic picture showing Earth rising over the Moon’s horizon. In 2018, the International Astronomical Union commemorated the event by naming a 25 mile diameter crater “Anders’ Earthrise.” Relive the astronauts’ experience. Dec. 22, 2022 — Expedition 68 Flight Engineer and NASA spacewalker Josh Cassada prepares a roll-out solar array for its deployment on the International Space Station’s (ISS) Port-4 truss segment as the orbiting lab flew 262 miles above the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Namibia. Astronauts Frank Rubio and Josh Cassada conducted a spacewalk on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, for seven hours and eight minutes to install the new roll-out solar arrays to upgrade the station’s power system. The new ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSAs) will increase power generation capability by up to 30%, increasing the station’s total available power from 160 kilowatts to up to 215 kilowatts. It was the 257th spacewalk in support of space station assembly, upgrades, and maintenance, and was…
