Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 each year and commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by the Second Continental Congress. NASA flies the U.S. flag on its missions throughout our solar system. 哈勃望远镜研究了一个神秘的星团

Like Sherlock Holmes’s magnifying glass, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope can peer into an astronomical mystery in search of clues. The enigma in question concerns the globular cluster Ruprecht 106, pictured here. Unlike most globular clusters, Ruprecht 106 may be what astronomers call a single population globular cluster. While the majority of stars in a globular cluster formed at approximately the same location and time, it turns out that almost all globular clusters contain at least two groups of stars with distinct chemical compositions. The newer stars will have a different chemical make-up that includes elements processed by their older, massive cluster companions. A tiny handful of globular clusters do not possess these multiple populations of stars, and Ruprecht 106 is a member of this…

There is a deep connection between some of the largest, most energetic events in the universe and much smaller, weaker ones powered by our own Sun. The results come from a long observation with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory of Abell 2146, a pair of colliding galaxy clusters located about 2.8 billion light years from Earth. Galaxy clusters contain hundreds of galaxies and huge amounts of hot gas and dark matter and are among the largest structures in the universe. Collisions between galaxy clusters release enormous amounts of energy unlike anything witnessed since the big bang and provide scientists with physics laboratories that are unavailable here on Earth. The International Space Station orbits into a dawn 261 miles above a cloudy Pacific Ocean in this image from April 2022. Not only does the station crew snap beauty shots of the planet we call home, the crew also conducts a variety of Earth and space science, including observations of the world’s oceans. NASA also has a variety of Earth-observing missions and even studies ocean worlds throughout our solar system. #WorldOceansDay Resources Search Space Station Research Learn More About NASA’s Earth-Observing Missions Why Study the Oceans? 金星上的狄金森陨石坑

This November 1996 image from Magellan shows Dickinson, an impact crater in the northeastern Atalanta region of Venus. The image is approximately 115 miles (185 kilometers) wide at the base and 43 miles (69 kilometers) in diameter. The crater is complex, characterized by a partial central ring and a floor flooded by radar-dark and radar-bright materials. Hummocky, rough-textured ejecta extend all around the crater, except to the west. The lack of ejecta to the west may indicate that the impactor that produced the crater was an oblique impact from the west. Extensive radar-bright flows that emanate from the crater’s eastern walls may represent large volumes of impact melt, or they may be the result of volcanic material released from the subsurface during the cratering event….

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with the Orion spacecraft leaves the Vehicle Assembly Building atop a mobile launcher on June 6, 2022, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. At approximately 8:20 a.m. EDT, NASA’s Artemis I Moon rocket arrived at the spaceport’s Launch Complex 39B after an eight-hour journey ahead of the next wet dress rehearsal attempt. Teams will work to secure the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft and mobile launcher to ground support equipment at the launch pad and ensure that the rocket is in a safe configuration in preparation of the upcoming tanking test. 围绕黑洞的巨大圆环

围绕黑洞的巨大圆环

This image features a spectacular set of rings around a black hole, captured using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The X-ray images of the giant rings reveal information about dust located in our galaxy, using a similar principle to the X-rays performed in doctor’s offices and airports. The black hole is part of a binary system called V404 Cygni, located about 7,800 light years away from Earth. The black hole is actively pulling material away from a companion star — with about half the mass of the Sun — into a disk around the invisible object. This material glows in X-rays, so astronomers refer to these systems as “X-ray binaries.” Image Credit X-ray: NASA/CXC/U.Wisc-Madison/S. 2022年飓风季节开始

Hurricanes are the most powerful weather event on Earth. The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 to November 30. Faster than a cheetah, the fastest animal on land, hurricanes produce winds of 74 miles an hour (119 kilometers per hour) or more. In this image from 2021, the crew aboard the International Space Station snapped this image of Hurricane Sam as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean while the station orbited 259 miles above Trinidad and Tobago.
