NASA astronaut Frank Rubio landed in Kazakhstan on Sept. 27, 2023, after spending 371 days in space aboard the International Space Station. Rubio’s mission is the longest single spaceflight by a U.S. astronaut in history. While on the space station, Rubio completed 5,963 orbits of the Earth. See the highlights of his year in space. The Artemis II crew and teams with NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program successfully completed on Sept. 20, the first in a series of integrated ground system tests at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for the upcoming mission around the Moon. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, practiced the procedures they will undergo on launch day, from putting on their Orion crew survival system spacesuits to traveling to the launch pad and up the mobile launcher, to prepare for their ride to space. Artemis II is the first crewed mission under Artemis and will test all of the Orion spacecraft’s systems with astronauts aboard before future missions to the Moon. Text credit:…
In this image from July 24, 2023, astronaut Frank Rubio completes a session on the Surface Avatar Remote Control Terminal, which investigates how haptic controls, user interfaces, and virtual reality could command and control surface-bound robots from long distances. While aboard the International Space Station, Rubio has worked on several experiments involving robotics, space physics, and biology, and he participated in three spacewalks. On Sept. 11, 2023, Rubio surpassed NASA’s single spaceflight record of 355 continuous days in space made by astronaut Mark Vande Hei on March 30, 2022. NASA TV broadcast a prerecorded space-to-ground conversation Vande Hei had with Rubio on Sept. 5, when he congratulated the orbiting astronaut for his record-breaking mission. Rubio is set to return to Earth on Sept. 27, when…
Support teams onboard the SpaceX recovery ship MEGAN work to open the hatch of the SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft shortly after it landed in the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 4, 2023, with NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev aboard. Bowen, Hoburg, Alneyadi, and Fedyaev are returning after nearly six months in space aboard the International Space Station. This was the first spaceflight for all members except Bowen. During this expedition, Hoburg completed his first spacewalk, Alneyadi became the first UAE astronaut to conduct a spacewalk, and Bowen tied the record for most spacewalks by a U.S. astronaut, also held by Mike Lopez-Alegria, Bob Behnken, Peggy Whitson, and Chris Cassidy. Watch the crew…
随着宇航员准备自1972年以来首次重返月球,他们已经接受了如何识别地标、发现地质特征以及帮助标记未来着陆的感兴趣区域的培训,所有这些都使用了LRO收集的数据。
At 3:27 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Aug. 26, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-7 crew members launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. They docked to the International Space Station and joined the current space station crew on Sunday, Aug. 27. While on the orbiting laboratory, Crew-7 will conduct new scientific research to benefit humanity on Earth and prepare for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit, including the collection of microbial samples from the exterior of the space station, the first study of human response to different spaceflight durations, and an investigation of the physiological…
Gateway’s International Habitat (I-Hab) module, provided by the European Space Agency (ESA), is the focus of this rendered image from Aug. 18, 2023. I-Hab is one of two of the space station’s habitation modules along with HALO, the Habitation and Logistics Outpost. Astronauts will live, conduct research, and prepare for lunar surface missions inside the two living quarters. I-Hab will also house life support systems and camera equipment that will enhance Gateway’s scientific research capabilities. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s planned contributions include I-HAB’s environmental control and life support system, batteries, thermal control, and imagery components. They will be integrated into the module by ESA prior to launch. Gateway will be humanity’s first space station in lunar orbit to support NASA’s deep space exploration plans,…
While wearing clean room suits, the Artemis II crew members (from left: NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen) check out their Orion crew module inside the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Aug. 7, 2023. The crew module is undergoing acoustic testing ahead of integration with the European Service Module. Orion will carry the crew around the Moon in the first crewed mission on NASA’s path to establishing a long-term lunar presence for science and exploration under Artemis. This artist’s concept from July 11, 1969, depicts the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle landing on the surface of the Moon. Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, carrying commander Neil Armstrong, command module pilot Michael Collins, and lunar module pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. On July 20, the Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility with Aldrin and Armstrong inside, about four miles downrange from the predicted touchdown point and almost one-and-a-half minutes earlier than scheduled. Four hours later, Armstrong emerged from the Eagle and deployed the TV camera for the transmission of the event to Earth.
