In this image, NASA astronaut and SpaceX Crew-3 Commander Raja Chari trains aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft in Hawthorne, California. Chari was selected by NASA to join the 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class and reported for duty in August 2017. The Iowa native graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1999 with bachelor’s degrees in astronautical engineering and engineering science. He earned a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. He also logged more than 2,500 hours of flight time in the F-35, F-15, F-16, and F-18. The Crew-3 mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program and is the third time that SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket…

The SpaceX Crew-3 team, consisting of NASA astronauts Raja Chari, Kayla Barron, and Tom Marshburn, and ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer, and support personnel participate in water survival training at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in this image from April 2021. The mission is slated to launch in late 2021. When Barron, Chari, Marshburn, and Maurer arrive at the orbiting laboratory, they will become expedition crew members for the duration of their six-month science mission. The crew will have a slight overlap with the Crew-2 astronauts, who arrived April 24. This will mark the second time commercial crew missions have overlapped on the station. The Crew-1 astronauts, who ended their mission with a splashdown off the coast of Panama City, Florida, on…

An army marches on its stomach, the saying goes, and astronauts fly on theirs. The success of any mission relies on plentiful, nutritious, and enjoyable food. A growing body of research on the space station looks at ways to improve the food supply as missions increase in length. Station crew members continue to work on two current food-related investigations. This image was taken during plant harvest from the Veggie production facility for the Veg-04A experiment, part of a series of fresh food experiments that includes HRF Veg. That investigation uses psychological surveys and crew evaluations of the flavor and appeal of plants grown on the space station. Veg-04A will supplement astronauts’ diets with salad greens. This uniform in the center of this image belonged to one of the unsung heroes of the Space Shuttle Program – Travis Thompson, former Closeout Crew Lead. The closeout crew was responsible for assisting the astronauts to strap into the shuttle’s crew module and take care of any other last-minute needs that arose. Ultimately, they close and seal the crew access hatch and leave the astronauts behind before they launch into space. On July 9, 2021, Thompson, who served for nearly 100 missions, and Deputy Administrator and former shuttle commander Pamela Melroy met to view his uniform at its exhibit in the National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. Melroy presented him with a plaque for the occasion and surprised…
