On June 5, 2023, Crew-5 astronauts Josh Cassada (left) and Nicole A. Mann (second from left) of NASA, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata (right) visited NASA Associate Administrator Bob Cabana (second from right) at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Mann, Cassada, and Wakata spent 157 days in space as part of Expedition 68 aboard the International Space Station. While aboard, the astronauts worked on experiments related to heart disease, 3D printing human tissue, and fluid behavior in microgravity. Watch Crew-5 talk about their five-month mission. This colorful zinnia, shown in an image from Jan. 22, 2016, grew aboard the International Space Station as part of the VEG-01 experiment. This investigation assessed the on-orbit function and performance of the Veggie facility, focusing on the growth and development of seedlings in the spaceflight environment and the composition of microbial flora on the plants and the facility. For this run, zinnias were grown for 60 days and produced flowers. Learn more about the Veggie facility and other ways NASA grows plants in space. NASA astronaut Stephen Bowen and United Arab Emirates astronaut Sultan Alneyadi (partially obscured) are pictured in their spacesuits, exiting the International Space Station’s Quest airlock and beginning a spacewalk on April 28, 2023. The duo spent seven hours and one minute in the vacuum of space routing cables and installing insulation, readying the orbital outpost for its next set of roll-out solar arrays due to be installed after their delivery on the next SpaceX Dragon cargo mission. Clouds gather over Nepal near Mount Everest (center) in this April 13, 2023, photograph from the International Space Station. This image was taken as the station orbited 263 miles above the Indian subcontinent. In addition to photography, instruments on the space station like the Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer and the Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems allow us to monitor weather and collect important data.
