空间站一瞥

NASA astronaut and Expedition 68 Flight Engineer Nicole Mann peers through one of the seven windows in the cupola, the International Space Station’s “window to the world” on Jan. 2, 2023. Mann displays the U.S. flag inside the cupola in the window next to her. The cupola is designed for watching operations outside the station such as robotic activities, the approach of vehicles, and spacewalks. Its windows provide spectacular views of Earth and celestial objects. 2023年1月7日 Space Stations in Low Earth Orbit Image Credit & Copyright: Zarcos Palma Explanation: On January 3, two space stations already illuminated by sunlight in low Earth orbit crossed this dark predawn sky. Moving west to east (left to right) across the composited timelapse image China’s Tiangong Space Station traced the upper trail captured more than an hour before the local sunrise. Seen against a starry background Tiangong passes just below the inverted Big Dipper asterism of Ursa Major near the peak of its bright arc, and above north pole star Polaris. But less than five minutes before, the International Space Station had traced its own sunlit streak across the dark sky. Its trail begins just above the W-shape outlined by the bright stars of…

Dec. 22, 2022 — Expedition 68 Flight Engineer and NASA spacewalker Josh Cassada prepares a roll-out solar array for its deployment on the International Space Station’s (ISS) Port-4 truss segment as the orbiting lab flew 262 miles above the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Namibia. Astronauts Frank Rubio and Josh Cassada conducted a spacewalk on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022, for seven hours and eight minutes to install the new roll-out solar arrays to upgrade the station’s power system. The new ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSAs) will increase power generation capability by up to 30%, increasing the station’s total available power from 160 kilowatts to up to 215 kilowatts. It was the 257th spacewalk in support of space station assembly, upgrades, and maintenance, and was…

从国际空间站上拍摄到的夏威夷火山

Hawaii’s big island and its two major volcanoes Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa rest under a partly cloudy sky on Feb. 8, 2022, in this view from the International Space Station. Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano had been quiet for nearly 40 years. However, in 2022, the volcano began to stir, showing increased numbers of small earthquakes and subtle swelling of certain land surfaces in September. On Nov. 27, fountains of lava began spurting from the mountain’s Northeast Rift Zone and streams of molten rock flowed to the north. Ten days into the eruption, a NASA aircraft conducted its first flight over the erupting volcano. The aircraft carried NASA’s Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar system, which was used to map the volcano’s…

2022年11月12日 Eclipse in the City Image Credit & Copyright: Stan Honda Explanation: A darker Moon sets over Manhattan in this night skyscape. The 16 frame composite was assembled from consecutive exposures recorded during the November 8 total lunar eclipse. In the timelapse sequence stars leave short trails above the urban skyline, while the Moon remains immersed in Earth’s shadow. But the International Space Station was just emerging from the shadow into the sunlit portion of its low Earth orbit. As seen from New York City, the visible streak of this ISS flyover starts near a star in Taurus and tracks right to left, through the belt of Orion and over Sirius, alpha star of Canis Major. Gaps along the bright trail of the fast moving…

In this image from June 24, 2022, NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Bob Hines, part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4, work on the XROOTS space botany investigation, which used the International Space Station’s (ISS) Veggie facility to test soilless methods to grow plants. The space agricultural study could enable production of crops on a larger scale to sustain crews on future space explorations farther away from Earth and could enhance cultivation of plants in terrestrial settings such as greenhouses, contributing to better food security for people on Earth. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 members Jessica Watkins, Bob Hines, Kjell Lindgren, and Samantha Cristoforetti link arms for a portrait on Oct. 14, 2022, just before boarding the Dragon Freedom crew ship and undocking from the International Space Station. During their nearly six-month science expedition aboard the orbiting laboratory, the Crew-4 astronauts continued work on investigations documenting how improvements to the space diet affect immune function and the gut microbiome, determining the effect of fuel temperature on the flammability of a material, exploring possible adverse effects on astronaut hearing from equipment noise and microgravity, and studying whether additives increase or decrease the stability of emulsions. NASA astronauts Watkins, Hines, and Lindgren, and European Space Agency astronaut Cristoforetti safely splashed down on Oct. 14, 2022, off the coast…
