Clouds of smoke billow out over the surrounding area as the uncrewed Skylab 1/Saturn V space vehicle launches from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on May 14, 1973. The Skylab 1 payload included the major components of the space station: the orbital workshop, Apollo Telescope Mount, multiple docking adapter, and airlock module. The Skylab 2 crew was scheduled to launch to the space station the following day aboard the Apollo Command and Service Module. Skylab helped pave the way for permanent operations in low-Earth orbit. Over the course of its human occupation from May 25, 1973, to Feb. 8, 1974, three crews visited Skylab, carrying out 270 scientific and technical investigations in the fields of physics, astronomy, and biological sciences. These activities were forerunners of what…

A team member from the Environmental Management Branch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center works to remove a mangrove seedling deposited by tropical winds on the shoreline of KARS Park at Kennedy in this image from April 12, 2023. This spring, workers in the area replaced sand and finished an offshore wave break. The mangroves will be repotted and held in nearby surface water protected from wind, waves, and ongoing maintenance activities until they can be replanted along the shoreline later. With its 140,000 acres located along the Atlantic coastline and within the Indian River Lagoon estuary, Kennedy has long taken measures to ensure its shorelines remain resilient. Mangroves are one of the greatest allies against erosion, as their root structure protects the shoreline in addition…

Vance I. Oyama holds a readout from the gas chromatograph in the life detection laboratory at NASA’s Ames Research Center in this picture from April 22, 1965. Oyama had a long career at NASA, during which he served as Life Detection Systems branch chief; he examined lunar soil samples and also helped design experiments for the Viking Mars Landers. Both he and his brother Jiro pioneered new areas of life sciences research at Ames. Visit the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month gallery.
