A Terrier-Improved Orion sounding rocket carrying students experiments for the RockOn! mission successfully launched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility Aug. 17 at 6 a.m. EDT. The launch carried experiments for Cubes in Space, RockOn!, and RockSat-C student programs. The sounding rocket reached an altitude of 103 miles (116.7 kilometers) before descending back down into the Atlantic Ocean via parachute. Teams will review the payload to return the experiments back to the students. On August 8, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of dense plumes of smoke streaming from dozens of large fires in the Northwest Territories. Several of these fires raged around Yellowknife, the province’s capital and largest city, where firefighters are conducting controlled burns around the city’s perimeter as a cautionary measure. These fires follow major outbreaks of fire in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Quebec, in May, June, and July. This artist’s concept from July 11, 1969, depicts the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle landing on the surface of the Moon. Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, carrying commander Neil Armstrong, command module pilot Michael Collins, and lunar module pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. On July 20, the Eagle landed in the Sea of Tranquility with Aldrin and Armstrong inside, about four miles downrange from the predicted touchdown point and almost one-and-a-half minutes earlier than scheduled. Four hours later, Armstrong emerged from the Eagle and deployed the TV camera for the transmission of the event to Earth. NGC 6652 lies in our own Milky Way galaxy in the constellation Sagittarius, just under 30,000 light-years from Earth and only 6,500 light-years from the galactic center. Globular clusters are stable, tightly gravitationally bound clusters containing anywhere from tens of thousands to millions of stars. The intense gravitational attraction between closely packed stars in globular clusters is what gives these star-studded objects their regular, spherical shape.
