Dec. 11, 2020, marks the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Langley Research Center’s 14×22 Subsonic Wind Tunnel. The facility is used to assess aerodynamic performance of aircraft over a wide range of takeoff, landing, cruise, and high angle-of-attack conditions. It can provide acoustic, tethered free-flight, and forced-oscillation testing, motorsports research, aerodynamic material design studies and more. The tunnel has been used by aircraft manufacturers, defense industry partners, the Department of Defense, and other government organizations. NASA projects have included researchers working space, science, exploration, and aeronautics programs in the continuing endeavor to achieve our NASA mission. In this photo, engineers led by researcher Greg Gatlin have sprayed fluorescent oil on a 5.8 percent scale model of a futuristic hybrid wing body during tests in the tunnel….

Future lunar landers might come equipped with 3D printed rocket engine parts that help bring down overall manufacturing costs and reduce production time. NASA is investing in advanced manufacturing – one of five industries of the future – to make it possible. Through a series of hot-fire tests in November, NASA demonstrated that two additively manufactured engine components – a copper alloy combustion chamber and nozzle made of a high-strength hydrogen resistant alloy – could withstand the same extreme combustion environments that traditionally manufactured metal structures experience in flight. This image shows the hot-fire testing of an additively manufactured copper alloy combustion chamber and a nozzle made of a high-strength hydrogen resistant alloy. Learn more about the 3D printing process.

NASA and Boeing have completed Starliner’s last parachute balloon-drop test designed to strengthen the spacecraft’s landing system ahead of crewed flights to and from the International Space Station. Read the full story. The tests, developed by Boeing and NASA, used six balloon-drop tests of a Starliner test article to gather supplemental performance data on the spacecraft’s parachutes and landing system. Each drop test focused on a different set of adverse conditions and used pre-flown parachutes to evaluate reusability margins for future missions. Starliner will be the first American-made orbital crew capsule to land on land. The spacecraft uses a series of parachutes and airbags that deploy at specific altitudes allowing Starliner to touch down gently in the desert of the western United States. NASA also…

This large expanse of space captured with the Hubble Space Telescope features the galaxy SDSS J225506.80+005839.9. Unlike many other extravagant galaxies and stunning nebulae imaged by Hubble, this galaxy does not have a short, popular name, and is only known by its long name given in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which refers to its coordinates in the sky. This galaxy – visible in the center right portion of the image – and its many wondrous neighboring galaxies lie in the constellation of Pisces (the Fish). This is a post-starburst galaxy, which is a product of galaxies that have merged within the past billion years. This merger event drove gas to the galaxy’s center and created an abundance of new stars, of which the brightest…

JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Expedition 64 astronaut Soichi Noguchi relaxes at the end of the work day inside the seven-windowed cupola, the International Space Station’s “window to the world.” The orbiting lab was flying above the South Pacific at the time this photograph was taken on Nov. 27, 2020. December will be a busy month as the Expedition 64 gears up for space freighter traffic. On Wednesday, Dec. 2, the entire crew trained for the unlikely event of an emergency on the station. They coordinated with mission controllers around the world practicing their communication, locating safety gear and maneuvering through escape routes. The crew also is preparing for the arrival of a new SpaceX Dragon cargo craft on Sunday, Dec. 6. Image Credit:…

Lying inside our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this Herbig–Haro object is a turbulent birthing ground for new stars in a region known as the Orion B molecular cloud complex, located 1,350 light-years away. Herbig–Haro (HH) objects are bright patches of nebulosity associated with newborn stars that form when narrow jets of partially ionized gas ejected by stars collide with nearby clouds of gas and dust. This image of Herbig-Haro Jet HH 24 was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2015. When stars form within giant clouds of cool molecular hydrogen, some of the surrounding material collapses under gravity to form a rotating, flattened disk encircling the newborn star. Although planets will later congeal in the disk, at this early stage the protostar is…

The solar system might be a lot hairier than we thought. This illustration shows Earth surrounded by theoretical filaments of dark matter called “hairs.” Dark matter is an invisible, mysterious substance that makes up about 27 percent of all matter and energy in the universe. The regular matter, which makes up everything we can see around us, is only 5 percent of the universe. The rest is dark energy, a strange phenomenon associated with the acceleration of our expanding universe. The data on hairy dark matter is based on a study by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Gary Prézeau that appeared in a 2015 article in the Astrophysical Journal. Learn more about hairy dark matter.
