Support teams onboard the SpaceX recovery ship MEGAN work to open the hatch of the SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft shortly after it landed in the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 4, 2023, with NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan Alneyadi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev aboard. Bowen, Hoburg, Alneyadi, and Fedyaev are returning after nearly six months in space aboard the International Space Station. This was the first spaceflight for all members except Bowen. During this expedition, Hoburg completed his first spacewalk, Alneyadi became the first UAE astronaut to conduct a spacewalk, and Bowen tied the record for most spacewalks by a U.S. astronaut, also held by Mike Lopez-Alegria, Bob Behnken, Peggy Whitson, and Chris Cassidy. Watch the crew…

As the International Space Station orbited 261 miles above Earth on Aug. 29, 2023, one of the space station’s external high-definition cameras captured Hurricane Idalia in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Idalia made landfall over the Big Bend region of Florida on the morning of Aug. 30, 2023, as a category 3 storm. Winds measured 205 kilometers (125 miles) per hour as the storm reached land. Watch an animation of the storm’s wind field. As the International Space Station orbited 259 miles above North Africa, swirls of clouds covered the sky. To the bottom right of the image, one of the station’s roll-out solar arrays peeks through. Astronauts aboard the space station see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to their high orbital velocity—17,500 miles per hour. In the more than 20 years that people have been living aboard the station, it has circumnavigated Earth tens of thousands of times. The last rays of an orbital sunset begin fading in Earth’s atmosphere silhouetting the cloud tops in this June 24, 2023, photograph from the International Space Station as it orbited 271 miles above the southernmost tip of South America. The space station makes 16 orbits of the Earth in 24 hours, so astronauts on the orbital outpost see 16 sunrises and sunsets. Get more quick facts about the International Space Station. During a spacewalk on June 9, 2023, NASA astronaut and Expedition 68 Flight Engineer Woody Hoburg rides the Canadarm2 robotic arm while maneuvering a roll-out solar array toward the International Space Station’s truss structure 257 miles above the Pacific Ocean. In the rear, is the SpaceX Dragon crew vehicle that docked to the Harmony module’s forward port on March 3 carrying four SpaceX Crew-6 crew members. The spacewalk with astronauts Steve Bowen and Woody Hoburg of NASA lasted 6 hours and 3 minutes. This was the ninth spacewalk for Bowen and the first for Hoburg.
