Watching the launch from Firing Room four in the Launch Control Center at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Lee Rosen, vice president of Mission and Launch Operations at SpaceX, pats Norm Knight, deputy director of Flight Operations. At 7:27 p.m. ET, Nov. 15, 2020, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried the company’s Crew Dragon spacecraft on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission on a journey to the International Space Station. The flight carries Commander Mike Hopkins, pilot Victor Glover and astronaut Shannon Walker of NASA, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Soichi Noguchi to the orbital platform, as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program.

With a degree in computer engineering and computer science from the University of Southern California, Lauren Denson is now an quality engineer and supervisor at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Her advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and ask early. Pursuing a degree in STEM field is challenging so it’s extremely important to build your network. This helps in ways to ensure you’re not alone, build resources for the future for collaboration or building your career.” Learn more about Lauren Denson.

The galaxy UGCA 193, seen here by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, is a galaxy in the constellation of Sextans (the Sextant). Looking rather like a waterfall, UGCA 193 appears to host many young stars, especially in the lower portion of this view, creating a striking blue haze and the sense that the stars are falling from “above.” The blue color of UGCA 193 indicates the stars that we see are hot — some more than six times hotter than our Sun. We know that cooler stars appear to our eyes as redder, and hotter stars appear bluer. A star’s surface temperature and color are also linked to its mass, with heavier stars “burning” at higher temperatures, resulting in a blue glow from their surfaces….

Inside SpaceX’s Payload Processing Facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the U.S.-European Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich ocean-monitoring satellite is being encapsulated in its payload fairing on Nov. 3, 2020. Sentinel-6 is scheduled to launch on Nov. 21, 2020, at 12:17 p.m. EST, atop the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Air Force Base. A U.S.-European partnership, the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich spacecraft will begin a five-and-a-half-year prime mission to collect the most accurate data yet on global sea level and how our oceans are rising in response to climate change. The mission will also collect precise data of atmospheric temperature and humidity that will help improve weather forecasts and climate models. The spacecraft is named after Dr. Michael Freilich, the…

This is the official portrait of the Expedition 1 crew, the first humans to live aboard the International Space Station. Arriving on station on Nov. 2, 2000, they were the first of 64 crews to live and work aboard the orbital laboratory. During a Jan. 30, 1996, press conference in Washington, DC, Vice President Al Gore and Russian Prime Minister Viktor S. Chernomyrdin announced the assignment of American astronaut William M. Shepherd and Russian cosmonaut Sergei K. Krikalev to the first team of crewmembers to occupy the International Space Station (ISS). Shepherd had completed three Space Shuttle missions and Krikalev had flown two long-duration missions aboard the Mir space station as well as on STS-60, becoming the first Russian cosmonaut to fly aboard the Space…

Night aboard the International Space Station can seemingly look like every spooky sci-fi movie you’ve ever seen. This image shows two empty spacesuits seemingly colluding as most of the astronauts slept. This is one of several images snapped by European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst during his first stay on the orbital laboratory in 2014. During his second stay, he served as Space Station Commander. He has spent nearly a year in space, having served two tours on the station.

Active regions on the sun combined to look something like a jack-o-lantern’s face on Oct. 8, 2014. The active regions appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy — markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona. This image blends together two sets of wavelengths at 171 and 193 angstroms, typically colorized in gold and yellow, to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance. This image is a blend of 171 and 193 angstrom light as captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. “精灵”在木星的大气中嬉戏

“精灵”在木星的大气中嬉戏

This illustration shows the lightning phenomenon known as a sprite and what a sprite could look like in Jupiter’s atmosphere. Named after a mischievous, quick-witted character in English folklore, sprites last for only a few milliseconds. They feature a central blob of light with long tendrils of light extending down toward the ground and upward. In Earth’s upper atmosphere, their interaction with nitrogen give sprites a reddish hue. At Jupiter, where the predominance of hydrogen in the upper atmosphere would likely give them a blue hue. 图片来源: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI

NASA astronaut Kate Rubins points to the International Space Station’s “voting booth” where she cast her vote from space this month. This is actually Rubins’ second time to vote from low-Earth orbit, having cast her first vote from space in 2016 when she was an Expedition 48-49 crew member. Voting in space has been possible since 1997 when a bill passed to legally allow voting from space in Texas. Since then, several NASA astronauts have exercised this civic duty from orbit.
