Although the ISS may appear to be physically near the Moon, it is not — it is physically near the Earth. In low Earth orbit and circulating around our big blue marble about every 90 minutes, the ISS was captured photographically as it crossed nearly in front of the Moon. The Moon, itself in a month-long orbit around the Earth, shows a crescent phase as only a curving sliver of its Sun-illuminated half is visible from the Earth. The featured image was taken in late March from Shanghai, China and shows not only details of Earth’s largest human-made satellite, but details…

NASA astronaut Stephen Bowen and United Arab Emirates astronaut Sultan Alneyadi (partially obscured) are pictured in their spacesuits, exiting the International Space Station’s Quest airlock and beginning a spacewalk on April 28, 2023. The duo spent seven hours and one minute in the vacuum of space routing cables and installing insulation, readying the orbital outpost for its next set of roll-out solar arrays due to be installed after their delivery on the next SpaceX Dragon cargo mission. Clouds gather over Nepal near Mount Everest (center) in this April 13, 2023, photograph from the International Space Station. This image was taken as the station orbited 263 miles above the Indian subcontinent. In addition to photography, instruments on the space station like the Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer and the Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems allow us to monitor weather and collect important data. NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, left, Jessica Watkins, center, and Bob Hines, right, take in the view from the interactive recreation of the International Space Station’s cupola in the One World Connected gallery at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum on March 28, 2023. Lindgren, Watkins, and Hines spent 170 days in space as part of Expeditions 67 and 68 aboard the International Space Station; while aboard the orbital laboratory, they conducted maintenance on the space station as well as science experiments. Stars leave streaks of light in concentric circles in this March 16, 2012, view from the International Space Station. To create this composite long exposure, NASA astronaut Don Pettit combined multiple 30-second exposures from a mounted camera on the space station into one image. The orbiting laboratory travels 5 miles per second, traveling around our planet every 90 minutes. An orbital sunrise reveals cloud tops above the Pacific Ocean northeast of New Zealand as the International Space Station orbited 260 miles above on Feb. 10, 2023. Astronauts aboard the space station see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to their high orbital velocity—17,500 miles per hour. In the more than 20 years that people have been living aboard, the station has circumnavigated Earth tens of thousands of times.
