庆祝约翰·格伦的历史使命

On February 20, 1962, NASA launched one of the most important flights in American history. The mission? Send a man to orbit Earth, observe his reactions and return him home safely. The pilot of this historic flight, John Glenn, became a national hero and a symbol of American ambition. NASA’s Multiple Axis Space Test Inertia Facility, or Gimbal Rig, was one of the many facilities where Glenn trained for their missions. After three years of training, Glenn rocketed into space aboard the Mercury capsule Friendship 7. He became the third American in space and the first to orbit Earth. The historical flight was no easy feat. At the end of his first orbit, a yaw attitude jet clogged, forcing Glenn to abandon the automatic control…

Twenty-five years ago in Feb. 1995, astronaut Bernard Harris (right) became the first African American to perform a spacewalk. In this image, he and fellow STS-63 astronaut Michael Foale, prepare to exit space shuttle Discovery’s airlock to began their spacewalk. The pair would test new insulation to protect astronauts from the cold, but the Mission Control cut their spacewalk short after the men reported feeling very cold in their suits. Want to be an astronaut and possibly make history? We’re accepting applications March 2-31 for the next class of Artemis Generation of astronauts! Retired U.S. Air Force Honorary Brigadier General Charles McGee speaks with NASA astronaut Alvin Drew during a Black History Month program titled “Trailblazers, The Story of a Tuskegee Airman.” McGee, a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, and Drew spoke at NASA Headquarters in Washington on Feb. 5, 2020. McGee was a career officer in the Air Force, also serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Over his 30 years of service he flew 409 combat missions. Of the 355 Tuskegee pilots who flew in combat, McGee is one of only nine surviving. Drew has been a NASA astronaut since 2000, flying aboard space shuttle missions STS-118 in 2007 and STS-133 in 2001, the final flight of the orbiter Discovery. Both missions…

黛博拉·约翰逊:为太空探索服务的职业

Deborah Johnson is long-time employee of NASA, who has spent her entire government career at the agency. Not all NASA personnel are astronauts and scientists. many like Johnson support the Mission Directorates and are the staff who keep the agency functioning at all levels–from administrative tasks to the “cool stuff” like public outreach. Below Johnson talks about her career and motivations. How long have you worked for NASA HQ? I have worked for NASA Headquarters since September 9, 1978 What made you want to work for NASA? I am a Washingtonian, and as a kid, I would visit the museums on the Mall. I had always been curious about space travel. I would visit the Air and Space Museum frequently to satisfy my curiosity for…

NASA历史上的本周:哈勃太空望远镜第三次维修任务——1999年12月19日

This week in 1999, space shuttle Discovery, mission STS-103, launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on the third Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission. Over the course of three planned extravehicular activities, the STS-103 crew restored Hubble to working order and upgraded some of its systems, allowing the then decade-old observatory to get ready to begin its second scheduled decade of astronomical observations. Hubble was released from Discovery’s cargo bay Dec. 24. Here, astronauts Michael Foale and Claude Nicollier install a Fine Guidance Sensor into a protective enclosure in the shuttle’s payload bay. The NASA History Program is responsible for generating, disseminating and preserving NASA’s remarkable history and providing a comprehensive understanding of the institutional, cultural, social, political, economic, technological and scientific aspects of NASA’s activities…

Edward Gonzales: 支持欠发达社区

Days before his 13th birthday, Edward Gonzales lost his father. In spite of childhood hardships, the strong work ethic that his father instilled drove him to obtain employment at one of the largest law firms on the West Coast – O’Melveny and Myers LLP. While at O’Melveny, he managed the Mail Services Department and supported events for former Secretary of State, the Honorable Warren Christopher. After working for the firm for over a decade and furthering his education, a friend mentioned an opening at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). He was hired as a business administrator, but quickly gravitated to the education side of the house. Since 2001, he has worked with underserved, underrepresented minorities and communities in the capacity of mentoring, co-managing various programs,…

Fifty years ago on Nov. 14, 1969, Apollo 12 launched at 11:22 a.m. EST from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center on a mission to land on the Moon’s Ocean of Storms. When the Earth moved directly between the Sun and the Apollo 12 spacecraft on the journey home from the Moon, the crew captured this image of a solar eclipse a 16mm motion picture camera. Aboard the craft were Commander Charles “Pete” Conrad; command module pilot Richard F. Gordon Jr. and lunar module pilot Alan Bean. While Conrad and Bean descended in the Lunar Module “Intrepid” to explore the Ocean of Storms, Gordon remained with the command and service modules “Yankee Clipper” in lunar orbit.
