Michun North:我每天的非凡之处在于帮助美国进入太空

Michun North is a program analyst who helps manage finances for the Commercial Crew Program. Here’s what she has to say about her work: “I manage the finances for the Commercial Crew Program—which works with aerospace industry partners to develop and launch a new generation of spacecraft capable of carrying crew to low-Earth orbit and the International Space Station. I work with the program to understand how we are executing resources and help them budget for future requirements. I’m responsible for ensuring the contract is adequately funded. Knowing that the end game of this program is that we’re going to launch astronauts back to the International Space Station—that’s the ultimate motivation and what gets you in the door every day. Even though we aren’t part…

阿波罗9号登月舱进行试驾

Apollo 9 launched in March 1969, and was the countdown to Apollo 11. Flown in low Earth orbit, it was the first flight of the full Apollo spacecraft: the command and service module with the lunar module. The mission was flown to qualify the lunar module for lunar orbit operations in preparation for the first Moon landing by demonstrating its descent and ascent propulsion systems. This would also demonstrate that its crew could fly it independently, then rendezvous and dock with the command module again, as would be required for Apollo 11. The three-person crew consisted of Commander James McDivitt, command module pilot David Scott, and lunar module pilot Russell Schweickart. In this image, McDivitt and Schweickart tested the lunar module in Earth orbit, while…

斯蒂芬·霍金和我们对宇宙不断变化的看法

Cosmologist Stephen Hawking changed our view of the universe with his remarkable theories and outreach. He also inspired generations around the world, making some of the most complicated physics of our time accessible to the masses. He also suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosisor, or ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which gradually paralyzed him over the decades. Despite this crippling disease, Hawking produced ground-breaking theories on black holes and other celestial phenomena. In this image, Dr. Hawking delivers a speech entitled “Why We Should Go Into Space” during a lecture that was part of a series honoring NASA’s 50th Anniversary, Monday, April 21, 2008. He was joined on stage by his daughter Lucy.

In 1967, Christine Darden was added to the pool of ‘human computers’ who wrote complex programs and tediously crunched numbers for engineers at NASA’s Langley Research Center. But Darden wanted to do more than process the data — she wanted to create it. After wading through daily calculations for eight years, Darden approached her supervisor to ask why men, with the same educational background as her (a master of science in applied mathematics), were being hired as engineers. Impressed by her skills, her supervisor transferred her to the engineering section, where she was one of few female aerospace engineers at NASA Langley during that time. Her first assignment was to write a computer program for sonic boom. That program launched a 25-year career of working…
