The issue of General Order No. 3 by Union troops on June 19, 1865, marked the official end of slavery in Texas and the U.S. On that Monday, enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom. That day of liberation became known as Juneteenth, when the Emancipation Proclamation was announced by Union troops in Galveston, Texas. On Thursday, June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed into law legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 each year and commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by the Second Continental Congress. NASA flies the U.S. flag on its missions throughout our solar system. In this iconic image from the Apollo 11 lunar landing, Commander Neil Armstrong snapped this picture of Buzz Aldrin saluting the flag at Tranquility Base. The Apollo 1 monument at Arlington National Cemetery was dedicated on Thursday, June 2, 2022, in Arlington, Va. The monument honors and memorializes the Apollo 1 crew of Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee. Family members of Apollo 1 astronaut Roger B. Dr. Kartik Sheth’s career spans academia, non-profits, and government. For the past seven years, Sheth has been a program scientist in both the Astrophysics and Earth Science Divisions at NASA, overseeing space missions, and research and development programs in cutting-edge technology and working towards some of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Previously, Dr. Sheth served as the Assistant Director for Research Infrastructures and Science Equity in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President at the White House. Nina Wang has more than a decade of experience in financial reporting and analysis, financial statement audits, and internal controls. Currently, she is an accountant in the Data Analysis Branch within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and on a one-year detail as a Program Analyst in the Resources Management Office within the Space Technology Mission Directorate. Misty Snopkowski is NASA’s program executive for the Commercial Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) Development program, which works to create a robust commercial LEO economy by enabling the development of commercially owned and operated LEO destinations. Her responsibilities include the oversight of activities within the Commercial LEO Development Program portfolio. This includes the International Space Station Commercial Module contract with Axiom Space, Commercial LEO Destinations-funded Space Act Agreements with Blue Origin, Nanoracks, and Northrup Grumman, private astronaut missions to the station, and the Commercial Use Policy, which enables commercial and marketing opportunities on the space station.
