In March 2017 during her eighth spacewalk, Peggy Whitson broke the spacewalking record for female astronauts. Whitson also was once the recordholder for amount of time in space by a female astronaut. Whitson has commanded the International Space Station (twice!), holds a doctorate in biochemistry, has received the NASA Space Flight Medal and served as the Chief Astronaut.

Yet, she too was once another applicant to become an astronaut.
